Captioner

A general term for someone who produces captions — encompassing stenographers, voice-writers, and editors of automated captions.

Captioner is a broader term than stenographer. It includes anyone who produces captions for a living: stenographers using steno keyboards, voice-writers using respeaking workflows, post-production captioners editing transcripts, and editors who clean up automated captions in real time.

The captioner role has shifted with the adoption of automated captioning. Modern captioning workflows often involve a captioner editing automated captions in real time rather than producing all text from scratch — preserving accuracy while taking advantage of ASR's speed.
